ACloserLook Reimbursement Issues in Diagnostic Imaging

UnitedHealthcare’s Imaging Accreditation Requirement

Beginning in the third quarter of 2008, UnitedHealthcare will require outpatient imaging sites and providers that bill on a 1500 Health Insurance Claim Form (HICF) or its electronic equivalent, and perform any of the following procedures – CT, MRI, PET, nuclear medicine/cardiology and echocardiography – to have completed and submitted an application to obtain accreditation as a condition for reimbursement.

To meet the third quarter 2008 deadline, providers should apply for accreditation as soon as possible. UnitedHealthcare recognizes the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) standards and has enlisted their expertise in facilitating accreditation. Specific accreditation guidelines and standards are available on the ACR and IAC websites. A list of the CPT codes that are included in the program can be found at https://www.unitedhealthcareonline.com/
