CMS Withdraws Request for OMB Review of DFRR

CMS has withdrawn its request for Office of Management and Budget (OMB) clearance on a proposed Disclosure of Financial Relationships Reporting (DFRR) system. Instead, CMS has reissued the proposal as part of the proposed 2009 HIPPS rule. In the proposed rule, CMS acknowledges higher burden
estimates than previously provided to OMB, and requests public input on several questions related to the design of the DFRR and the proposed data collection process. The proposed plan would require an initial 500 to 600 hospitals to disclose information requested on the DFRR and submit related documents on physician investments in hospitals, as well as compensation arrangements between hospitals and physicians that are unrelated as to whether those physicians have an investment interest. As previously mentioned, CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule through June 13.
