CMS Rules against FDG-PET Coverage for Fever and Infection

CMS ruled that it would not extend Medicare coverage for FDG-PET for three indications: chronic osteomyelitis, infection of hip arthroplasty and fever of unknown origin fever because the evidence is inadequate to conclude that FDG-PET improves health outcomes in the Medicare population. Therefore, they will be continuing the national noncoverage of FDG- PET for these indications. CMS also has determined that the request for coverage is not appropriate for the Coverage with Evidence Development (CED) paradigm.
