CERETEC is an imaging agent that is labeled with technetium 99m; because of its special properties, it has two different indications. One is for visualization of cerebral blood flow in stroke patients. The other is for labeling of white blood cells to localize intra-abdominal infection and inflammatory bowel disease. CERETEC received FDA approval for use in the U.S. in 1988.
A thorough knowledge of the normal distribution of intravenously administered technetium Tc 99m exametazime injection is essential in order to interpret pathologic studies accurately. Caution should be exercised in making the final diagnosis. Results can be affected by the presence of tumor, infarction, peritonitis, or nongastrointestinal or bony sites of inflammatory cell collections.
